Is it because of our (wonderful) warm dry spell on the Long Beach Peninsula that lasted almost 100 days without much moisture? Or is it because we are having our Wild Mushroom Celebration this weekend at Boreas that the higher power has halted the handsome King Boletus (porcini) mushroom from peaking up from the soil? Even last year, a very dry summer into fall, we had porcini’s and matsu’s. Veronica Williams, our friendly forager and queen of the woods, has been unable to find any mushrooms in her favorite productive spots. We are sad. Maybe today will be the day, after a week of some moisture, that the beauties will show their domes and emerge from hiding. We can only hope! So it’s out with the dehydrated porcini’s and perhaps at Pelicano Restaurant tonight, we will dine on five courses of mushrooms–they just might not be WILD ONES!
We normally worship the King Boletus this weekend. Alas, the King is in hiding!

Bill and I take a lot of pictures of sunrises and sunsets wherever we happen to be. Bill is the sunrise and I’m the sunset specialist. He’s the more alert morning guy and I’m the evening person. We each think that the pics the other takes look a lot like the myriad of sunset and sunrise pics we’ve each taken, but to us they all look different and fascinating. So–this time of year at the beach is perfect for taking pictures–the light is beautiful, the rainbows sometimes are doubles and on the rare occasion, we have seen triples. We pull off the roads and whip out our cell phones if that’s all we have, and take pictures. We can’t help ourselves. From Boreas Inn decks and windows, if you have your camera ready, you can catch the eagles flying by and the marsh hawks cruising the dunes looking for prey. Wait for sundown, my favorite time and capture the beauty of the sun leaving for the day. At this time of year, the rebirth of my precious flowers in the (currently wild-looking) gardens , the wild weather and the promise of warmer days lift my spirits. Do you feel the same?

Where else can you behold such open space on a beach anywhere in the country with a glorious winter sunset as the highlight of your day? Tonight the full moon will glisten off the water…with clear skies and a winter nip in the air… Come to a place where you will find beautiful surroundings, a beach that goes on forever, culminating in headlands with lighthouses, walking trails and bicycle paths along the ocean and through the wooded parklands. There is always something to entertain you whether visually, physically or spiritually–or all three at once. When you tire of that, you can sleep like a baby in the most comfortable beds with down over you and under you, dine on a breakfast that will last all day long, and perhaps just do nothing…until dinner of course, when you again DINE at the finest restaurants on Oregon/Washington coast. Wet Winter Plants in the Rain Forest
Event Date: Saturday, February 13, 2010
Start Time: 10 a.m. End Time: Noon Maximum: 15 people
Fee: Free to members of Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge $10 per person for non-members.
Location: Willapa NWR Headquarters, 3888 State Route 101 (Hwy 101 near Milepost 24) Ilwaco, WA 98624
Event description: This is a wet winter walk in coastal temperate rain forest along Headquarters Creek at Willapa NWR Headquarters.
After a brief orientation indoors, we will walk along and over the creek, and through rain forest to look at plants that grow during the wet season. The focus will be on lichens, mosses and liverworts. We may find a few salamanders and frogs, too. This walk is less than a mile long, on a naturally surfaced trail, with moderate slopes in some sections.
This walk will not be canceled due to rain, but it will be canceled due to high wind, if winds above 40 mph arrive along the coast. If you do not receive a message or phone call canceling the walk by 7-8 a.m. on the day of the walk, then it has not been canceled.
Gear & Equipment: Rain gear, including boots, is required. Bring a hand lens or digital camera to see small plants more easily. This will be a good site to take close-up shots of many small plants.
The Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge will be announcing details regarding their 3rd annual photo contest in April, 2010. The winning photos will be included in the 2011 Willapa National Wildlife Refuge calendar.

News flash! The Chinook Observer just released their reader’s survey results for the 2010 “Best of the Discovery Coast” and Boreas Inn scored in four categories! We were named “Coziest Bed and Breakfast” and “Most Romantic Get-away” and placed second for “Best Coffee” and third for “Best Omelette”. Wow! Kudos to Cafe Mam from Eugene, our organic, shade-grown, free-trade coffee with our own Boreas Blend– French, Italian and Espresso. We couldn’t be more pleased! We still have a couple of rooms open for our New Years’ Day Celebration with Crab Cakes and Champagne! Come to the beach! (And of course, we will be watching our Ducks win the Rose Bowl!)

The Boreas Hearth glows with warmth and holiday lights!
We have hosted over a dozen holiday open houses for our locals each year.
We will be having a full house at Boreas Inn this weekend. The inn will be bustling full of Santa’s helpers! Each year, our loyal guests come to Boreas on the first weekend of December to work and eat (and get a free night!) and make the Inn beautiful for the holidays. We drag out the decorations and make the tree (this year a perfect Noble Fir) beautiful. We call it a Hanukkah Bush/Christmas Tree to be inclusive! We will not be holding our traditional Open House on the second weekend of the year, but will be open for informal tours and will hopefully be finding a time when the Long Beach Peninsula Visitor’s Bureau volunteers can come to Boreas for a Open House to thank them for their work! Cindy and Robert Davis, Walter and Tracey Voll, Fred Humphrey, Odell Hathaway, Su and Ray Benson are among long-time Boreas friends and loved ones. Jessica and Chris Miller will also be helping out. Chris is the new school district psychologist and Jessica is a teacher who helped us out over the summertime. They moved here in June from Colorado and we have adopted them. We are looking forward to the decorating, the potluck and the company. So come see Boreas Inn decorated for the holidays. We have rooms open for Christmas and for our New Years three day holiday weekend. Take advantage of our “Walk-in” Special rate for all of December and January, except for one night over New Years’ when you will pay our regular price for that night. We have included our Annual Dungeness Crab Cake and Champagne Breakfast for New Years’ Day! Make your reservations now! We would love to see you!

Bill and I have beautiful and unique guests at Boreas Inn, of that, there is no doubt. Do they come for our stuffed pears, our buttery pastries, great coffee, wild mushroom and smoked sturgeon fritattas? Sure they do. Do they come for a dreamy nights’ sleep on glorious beds? Yep–they do. Great views, laughter, open space and us, the silly innkeepers….uh huh. But do our guests come to entertain us with exceptional music played just for us at the breakfast table? Very very seldom… Today was such a treat for us. David and Dana Berge, after knowing each other for 30 years, decided to marry last month. They came to Boreas for one night, last night, as part of their ongoing honeymoon. (So sweet!!) We didn’t know they were talented musicians and played music with our treasured local resident (well, now he lives across the river…), Hobe Kytr. Dave Berge and Hobe recorded a CD called “Dog Salmon and Rutabagas, Songs of the Northwest“. This morning Dana and Dave sang and played “Fisherman’s Life” and “Ilwaco Town” and another fine piece on their autoharps. They held a private concert just for Bill and me, impromptu! We were entranced with the picking and the strumming, the beautiful lyrics, and the fact that the music they played for us have meaning to where we live and who we are. Then, winning our hearts even more, they graciously gave us one of the CD’s. It was a wonderful trade–we were rewarded by the generosity and grace of these two lovely and talented guests who have found love with each other–we cooked them a great breakfast and gave them a good nights’ rest–they played beautiful music together. Such a nice morning. We are grateful to have them as new friends and thankful to Hobe Kytr for sending these very special newlyweds our way. Thank you, Hobe, thank you!

World Kite Museum—

This weekend promises to be another fine World Kite Museum event in Long Beach, Washington! To honor Chinese New Year, “China Then and Now” is a celebration taking place on February 7th and 8th from 10 am-4 pm at the World Kite Museum, right down the street from Boreas Inn. There will be exhibits including Chinese kites, puppets, stamps, hand painted silk and bamboo kites and photographs. You will be able to participate in cultural and artistic events. There will be Mah Jong games with demonstrations and “Make it and Take It” Projects with some of our finest local artists. You can learn to make Asian Greeting Cards with Annie Unwin, discover Sumic Painting with Chris Goodwin and the Kite Museum staff and volunteers will guide you in Chinese lantern making, Chinese knotting and Red Paper Cutting. So if you would like to see, experience and even take home a project that you have made, this event promises to be not only visually beautiful, but a fun and interesting experience in making your own souvenirs! It’s been warm and beautiful at the beach, so come experience a unique mid-winter weekend in Long Beach. We have a couple of openings at the inn and will set up your dinners at our local favorite spots. This will be a glorious weekend! (There is also a clam dig this weekend!)

It was a stormy day this Saturday and in the afternoon, the skies cleared and these spectacular clouds appeared on the horizon. At first, they were two alligator-like heads, then the wind flattened out the southerly head and turned it into a whipping tail. We hadn’t seen anything like it before–so we snapped a shot off our top deck. What an entertaining and beautifully colored sunset it was. The image doesn’t do it justice!
